Sustainable Flooring is a Boulder County businesses which is a leader in working toward the goal of a sustainable planet earth. We have asked them to write a short article about how their business is working to support this vision. Please join us in supporting their vision as they support our aspirations of creating a healthy world for ourselves and for generations to come.
Sustainable Flooring, is a designer, manufacturer and supplier of “green” and “sustainable” flooring and interior finish products. We understand our products and how they differ from the competition, and are committed to preserving the environment. We specialize in bamboo, cork, and other “sustainable” wood products. All our products are designed and made to be as good as they can be – and we actively push factories supplying our products to meet the highest attainable environmental standards, including adopting new manufacturing practices and technologies that are not only designed to make better products, but reduce their “carbon” footprint, and toxic chemical use. You will NOT find any “unsustainable” products in our product offering, because our mission is truly “sustainability”, and not just the marketing of it.
To help minimize costs to the consumer, Sustainable Flooring imports our products directly to one of three national distribution centers --East Coast, West Coast, and Rocky Mountain -- and supplies its products directly to the customer. This means that each customer gets high-quality sustainable products at a comparable, and sometimes less expensive, price than can be found through suppliers selling “traditional” commodity products.
Sustainable Flooring’s products are used all over the country, and have garnered a strong and loyal following with many quality-conscious architects, designers, corporations, and homeowners. Our products are used by REI, Starbucks, Ritz-Carlton, and various retail stores, such as Lululemon Athletica, corporate offices and showrooms, like Herman Miller, and handful of museums around the country. These same Sustainable Flooring products are available to the private homeowner, affordably, across North America, and more specifically in Boulder, where we are based. We understand that flooring is a major investment, and we never compromise on quality.
INTERESTING FACTS:
Cork is harvested from the bark of the Cork Oak tree. Instead of cutting down the cork tree, the bark is peeled off, and the tree left to regenerate. Cork is tremendously versatile. Made up of over 200 million cells of air per cubic inch, cork has unsurpassed thermal and acoustic characteristics. Prior to the advent of Styrofoam, cork was used in the refrigeration industry. Cork was used for decades on the decks of battleships. There is more “cork” being grown than at any time in recent history; the shift in the wine industry to plastic is more due to wine taint and increased wine production than any other reason.
Bamboo, as a raw material, can grow up to 60’ in a couple months. Though it grows quickly, it is very important that the material is left to internally harden (mature), prior to its harvesting. Many suppliers purchase immature bamboo raw material, which has a detrimental effect on the products’ hardness, though aesthetically looks the same out of the box. Bamboo has unmatched carbon sequestration properties when compared to “timber” (approx. 35% more than a similar stand of trees).
